Frequently asked questions
Thoughtful answers to help you feel informed, connected, and at home in your care.
Midwifery care at Levana Birth is deeply relational. I want to know how you’re sleeping, what you’re eating, what feels heavy, and what you’re looking forward to, not just your blood pressure and your baby’s heartbeat. Our approach leans deeply holistic, with a love for traditional wisdom, herbal support, and nourishing the body from the inside out.
Our hour-long visits give us space to build that relationship. Your care blends clinical assessment with individualized guidance on nourishment, movement, rest, and holistic support, with the same primary midwife throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. With no office staff or rotating team of midwives, you speak directly with me and build on the same relationship at each visit, without having to retell your story to someone new! As soon as you’re ready, but the earlier the better! First trimester care is included in your full midwifery package. You don’t need to wait until a certain week to begin receiving support.
Reaching out early also gives us more time to get to know each other and prepare for your birth and postpartum season.
It means looking at the whole picture: your physical health, emotional well-being, nourishment, sleep, daily rhythms, and support system.
Alongside routine prenatal assessments, we talk about practical ways to support your body through pregnancy and prepare for birth. Food, movement, rest, and appropriate supplements or herbal options may be part of that conversation. Recommendations are individualized, with attention to your desires, experience, safety, available evidence, and when additional medical care is needed.
Yes! You have direct, personal access to me throughout your care.
Routine questions and nonurgent messages are answered during weekday business hours. For urgent pregnancy concerns and labor, I’m available by phone 24/7. We’ll review exactly when and how to reach me so you feel confident asking for help.
If you desire a homebirth and have a healthy, low-risk pregnancy, a planned homebirth may be a wonderful fit for your family. Feeling comfortable in your birth space and connected to your care provider matters, and we’ll explore your preferences and health history together.
I also love offering preconception consultations to help families decide on which route is best for them! You don’t have to wait until you’re pregnant to ask questions, explore homebirth, and talk about nourishing and preparing your body for pregnancy.
Throughout your care, we continue assessing your health and your baby’s well-being to make sure homebirth remains an appropriate option.
Yes! First babies don’t have to be trial runs. Your body doesn’t need previous birth experience to be capable of giving birth, and being a first-time mother alone doesn’t rule out homebirth.
If you’re healthy, low risk, and desire a homebirth, we can explore whether it’s a good fit for you. Together, we’ll prepare for labor, build confidence, and make a thoughtful plan so you feel supported and empowered as you welcome your first baby.
I deeply trust the birth process, and I believe that trust belongs alongside thoughtful preparation and skilled care. Safety begins during pregnancy: assessing whether homebirth is appropriate for you, supporting your health, and building mutual trust through honest conversations and shared decision-making.
Location matters, too. Being within 30 minutes of a hospital with labor and delivery services is preferred. We discuss your location and create an individualized transfer plan before birth.
I arrive with equipment and medications to monitor and care for you and your baby, including:
- Equipment to monitor your baby’s heartbeat during labor
- Four different medications to treat postpartum hemorrhage
- Resuscitation equipment for emergencies, including newborn breathing support, oxygen, ambu bags, & deep suction
- IV supplies and fluids when needed
- Newborn medications, if desired
- Lidocaine and suturing equipment for appropriate repairs after birth
- Antibiotics for GBS if desired
Midwives are trained to recognize complications, respond to emergencies that require immediate care at home, and begin stabilization while arranging hospital transfer when needed. Some complications require hospital treatment, and recognizing those situations early is an essential part of my role.
Birth often unfolds beautifully with patience, privacy, and attentive support. My approach is to protect that process while bringing skilled hands, careful observation, and a clear plan when additional help is needed.
Yes! You are at the center of your care, and your voice, values, and decisions matter. Testing and procedures are conversations, with space to understand your options, ask questions, and give or decline consent.
I’ll explain the benefits, risks, and alternatives, share my recommendations, and discuss how your choices may affect your care. My role is to help you make informed decisions and feel heard, respected, and supported throughout the process.
During pregnancy, we spend time learning what helps you feel grounded, what worries you, and how you want to be supported. Your preferences guide the atmosphere we create together which may include soft lighting, familiar music, warm water, gentle touch, prayer, quiet, or words of encouragement.
As labor unfolds, I will always offer comfort measures such as movement, position changes, counterpressure, warmth, and reminders to rest, drink, and nourish yourself as you’re able. I follow your cues and make room for your instincts while attentively monitoring you and your baby.
My role is to bring a steady presence and skilled care so you feel heard and cared for through each wave.
Absolutely! Anyone you’d like to bring is welcome at any appointment. Partners, children, doulas, and other loved ones are invited to ask questions, listen to baby’s heartbeat, and be part of preparing for this new little life.
We love doulas and welcome their involvement! Having someone devoted to your comfort and encouragement can be a beautiful addition to your birth team. I also love helping partners feel confident and finding meaningful ways for siblings to be included.
You get to choose who shares your birth space, and we’ll talk together about how your people can help you feel loved, comfortable, and supported.
Hospital transfers are uncommon in my practice (around the national average of 5-10%) and when they do happen, they are usually nonurgent. We talk through the possibility during pregnancy so you understand the plan and have space to ask questions.
If a labor transfer becomes necessary, I go with you. I call the hospital, give a clinical report, and fax your records so the receiving team knows who we are, what has been happening, and what care we’re requesting. Whenever possible, we coordinate ahead so a room and team are ready when we arrive, although hospital availability and urgent circumstances can affect that process.
Your need for connection and reassurance doesn’t change when your birth location does. I continue offering support, helping you understand what’s happening, and making sure your preferences are communicated. You are still deserving of a beautiful, supported birth, wherever your baby is born.
You deserve to be cared for just as tenderly as your new baby. At Levana Birth, postpartum care extends through six months, with visits at 24–48 hours, two weeks, six weeks, twelve weeks, and an optional visit at six months. These are spacious, personal visits where we have time to talk about how you’re really doing.
We assess your physical recovery, bleeding, healing, and emotional well-being, while discussing sleep, nourishment, feeding, and the support you have at home. Early visits also include all routine newborn assessments, weight checks, and feeding support, with referrals when you or your baby need additional care.
This ongoing relationship offers much more time and continuity than a brief hospital discharge check or a single six-week appointment. There is room for the tender, everyday questions, changes in your recovery, and feelings you may not have expected.
You also have direct access to me between visits, and the option to add more visits as needed. Whether you’re navigating feeding challenges, wondering about your recovery, or simply needing reassurance, you have someone who knows you and is paying attention. Your care continues well beyond the birth because your well-being matters through every stage of becoming a mother.
Your package includes first trimester and ongoing prenatal care, labor and birth care, postpartum and newborn care, direct access to your midwife, a birth tub with setup and takedown, and the fee for the assisting midwife at your birth.
We’ll review the financial agreement together so you understand the package and any separate costs before beginning care. There are more details on each package here!
Yes! Flexible payment options allow you to spread payments throughout your pregnancy.
A $500 initial payment is due at your first visit and applied toward your package total. The remaining balance is due by 36 weeks. Ask about the $250 discount and its qualifying payment requirements.
Like all out of hospital midwives in Oklahoma, Levana Birth is an out-of-network practice. After your birth, I can provide an itemized superbill for you to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Benefits vary by plan.
Labs and ultrasounds are often covered, and we can directly bill insurance for those services. Your deductible, network, and individual benefits still apply.
Many healthsharing programs help with midwifery and homebirth expenses. We can submit bills before your birth according to your program’s requirements. Please confirm maternity eligibility, sharing limits, and submission timelines with your healthshare.
I attend home births within about an hour and a half of Tulsa, and I also welcome families who travel from farther away!
If you live outside my radius, you can plan to birth closer to Tulsa at one of the birth centers I have access to, a family member’s home, or a suitable Airbnb with the host’s permission. We’ll talk through your options, travel timing, and what makes a space appropriate for birth so you can feel comfortable and prepared.
